The Australian
Housing Crisis

Our Current Situation

The Australian housing crisis has been a complex issue for several decades and is exacerbating every year due to the widening gap between housing prices and average incomes, compounded by the increase in natural disasters.

Affordability

The recent shortage of affordable housing, combined with high property prices, has created a situation where many Australians are struggling to find a place to call home. The housing crisis is having a profound impact on the lives of many people, particularly those on low incomes, who are finding it increasingly difficult to secure safe, affordable and appropriate housing.

One of the main factors contributing to the housing crisis is the affordability gap between housing and average incomes widening, making it increasingly difficult for people to purchase a home, especially for first-time buyers. This has led to a situation where many people are forced to pay high rents that leave them with little disposable income, or being forced to live in overcrowded or substandard conditions.

Population growth in Australia’s major cities has also put a strain on the supply of housing, leading to increased demand and skyrocketing property prices.

The Impact

The lack of affordable housing is also having a significant impact on the mental and physical health of many people. Homelessness is a growing problem in Australia, with many people forced to sleep on the streets or in temporary accommodation such as shelters or crisis centres. This lack of stability and security can have a profound impact on a person’s well-being, leading to increased levels of anxiety, depression and other mental health problems.

Increasing natural disasters are also having a massive impact on housing, forcing many into temporary accommodation if and where it may be available.

In some cases, it is years before victims are able to move back into their family home due to building material shortages, insurance disputes or in some cases lack of insurance cover at all.

“Housing stress is the fastest growing cause of homelessness and services are being smashed with people seeking help because they can’t afford a roof over their heads.”
